O’Donnell welcomes Public Confirmation from NTA that Northern Distributor Road included in Updated Limerick-Shannon Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy (LSMATS)
- Updated 2nd Draft LSMATS to go out for Public Consultation in January 2022

Limerick City TD and Chair of the Transport and Communications Committee, Kieran O’Donnell has welcomed the direct public confirmation he has received from the National Transport Authority (NTA) that the Limerick Northern Distributor Road (LNDR) continues to be included in the updated 2nd Draft of the Limerick Shannon Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy (LSMATS) as per the first Draft of the document, which was published in September 2020. The NTA was responding to direct questioning from Deputy O’Donnell at a meeting of the Transport Committee on Wednesday 3rd November.
NTA officials also confirmed to Deputy O’Donnell that this updated 2nd Draft LSMATS is due to go out for public consultation in January 2022.
“I welcome the direct public confirmation I received from the National Transport Authority’s Mr Hugh Creegan, Director of Transport Planning and Investment and Deputy Chief Executive (NTA) that the Limerick Northern Distributor Road (LNDR) continues to be included in the Updated 2nd Draft of the Limerick Shannon Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy (LSMATS) as per the first Draft of the document.
“This Updated 2nd Draft of the LSMATS is due to go out for public consultation this coming January. Furthermore, Mr. Creegan stated that it will also incorporate public bus transport provision on it. He provided this direct confirmation to me at a public meeting of our Oireachtas Transport and Communications committee held recently on Wednesday 3rd November.
Mr Creegan confirmed: “The Northern Distributor Road with public Transport provision on it was in our first (LSMATS) document and it is our proposal to have in our second document.
Mr Creegan continued: “Our intention is to go a second round of public consultation in January [2022].
Deputy O’Donnell: “The Northern Distributor Road is key piece of road infrastructure for Limerick and is vital for balanced connectivity and development across our city, including the provision of public bus transportation links.
“I look forward to the upcoming Public Consultation on the Updated 2nd Draft of the Limerick-Shannon Area Transport Strategy (LSMATS) to be held this coming January and I strongly encourage all in Limerick City, our towns, villages and environs to engage in the process.
